The Leadership Book Club will discuss “Night,” by Elie Wiesel, on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. in Arctic Java on the ground floor of Wood Center. Students who register can pick up a free copy of the book from the Leadership, Involvement and Volunteer Experience Office in Wood Center.
Students can see the movie “Hacksaw Ridge” and join a discussion afterward on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The Leadership, Involvement and Volunteer Experience Office is sponsoring the free viewing. The discussion will be at Denny’s restaurant, where students can get a free dessert.
On Nov. 5 at UAF, the Comic Club will watch and discuss the movie “V for Vendetta,” a futuristic movie based on a DC/Vertigo Comics series whose freedom-seeking main character wears a Guy Fawkes mask. The event will begin at 4 p.m. in Arctic Java on the ground floor of Wood Center. Food will be provided.
Students looking to develop their leadership style can join a conference Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Wood Center ballroom. Ashley Strom, with High Impact Training, will lead workshops during the event. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Fifteen courses, most of them core classes, will be offered during the 2017 WINTERmester, Jan. 4-13. During WINTERmester, a student can complete a three-credit class in two weeks. Classes are intense and meet for five hours a day. Most courses will help fulfill degree requirements. Registration begins Nov. 14.
State geologist Steve Masterman and state forester Chris Maisch will speak at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in November. Masterman, the state geologist and director of the Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys in Fairbanks, will talk at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Wood Center ballroom. Maisch, the state forester, will speak at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 9, also in the ballroom. Both informal presentations are open to the public.
