The Alaska Summer Research Academy at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is extending the application deadline until April 30 for five of its high school modules. The high school program is for students who will be in grades nine to 12 in the fall of 2016. Financial aid may be available.

The five modules accepting applications are:

Time Sleuths — Archaeology in Interior Alaska: Students go on a seven-day expedition to a 13,000-year-old archaeology site at Quartz Lake in Alaska with professional archaeologists from the UA Museum of the North.

Bring Back the Blimps: Students build their own blimps, from the construction of the gondola frame to the Mylar envelope. They also program the flight controls.

Environmental Chemistry of the Arctic: Students investigate the natural and human-driven processes in the rapidly changing Alaska environment through field trips and by using analytical equipment in the labs.

Full-stack Web Development: Students will create a Linux server infrastructure to host their own websites and applications. They will also build a website using tools like HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and Node.js.

Weather or Not: Students explore the different scales of weather and climate with professional atmospheric scientists and conduct experiments that include releasing pilot balloons at Poker Flat Research Range.

Modules will be held on weekdays July 18-29, 2016. The module, "Time Sleuths," will also include the weekend because students will go on a seven-day camping trip near an archaeological site.

All modules will have about 8 to 10 students and two or more instructors. The program is offered through the UAF College of Natural Science and Mathematics.
