Basic prospecting workshops for aspiring miners will be offered in Kenai, Palmer and Tok.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will host the one-day workshop April 18 in Kenai, April 25 in Palmer and May 2 in Tok. Instructor Dave Wright has lived and prospected in the Interior since the early 1970s, mostly in the Goodpaster and Richardson districts, and he has experience with locating, developing and promoting mining properties.

The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will cover ore material testing and identification, geological maps, staking a claim, prospecting tools and equipment, geochemical sampling methods, gold panning and sluicing, and an overview of rock and mineral deposits.

The workshop fee is $50. Register online at http://bit.ly/ces-workshops. The Kenai workshop will meet in Room 121 of the Kenai Peninsula College Steffy Building; in Palmer at the Matanuska Experiment Farm, 1509 S. Georgeson Road; and in Tok at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Tok Center. For more information, contact Meg Burgett at 907-746-9472 or asburgett@alaska.edu.
