Be prepared for winter weather

Advanced preparation helps ensure that an average incident doesn't turn into a dangerous one. Wherever you are in Alaska, be sure to dress for the weather and keep emergency cold weather gear and supplies in your vehicle at all times.

Because the University of Alaska Fairbanks is a residential campus, every effort is made to keep it open and operating, even during extreme cold. Any weather-related closures or other emergency information will be initially disseminated via one or more of the following methods:

  • UA Alert emails

  • Posted on UAF on Alert website

  • Posted on social media

  • Updated on UAF hotline at 474-7UAF (7832).

The National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory for the middle Tanana Valley through noon today throughout Interior Alaska, with visibility reduced to one-quarter mile. High temperatures will range from 35 to 45 degrees below zero. UAF remains open regular hours at campus locations in the Fairbanks and North Pole areas.

Employees should use their own judgment about whether they can safely travel to campus. Those who cannot safely make it to work should discuss appropriate leave or alternate schedule options with their supervisors.

Faculty members should contact their students directly if they cannot make it to campus and must cancel a class. Students should assume classes will be held as scheduled unless they hear otherwise.

If conditions change, information will be posted online at the UAF on Alert website.
