The University of Alaska Fairbanks will break ground on two major construction projects during ceremonies March 30.

At 2:30 p.m,, officials will break ground on the 34,000-square-foot expansion of the Wood Center. When the project is complete in the fall of 2014, the expanded Wood Center will house a new student dining facility, as well as a ground-level coffee shop and renovated Wood Center administration and programming offices. The new dining facility will replace Lola Tilly Commons. The $30.7 million project is being financed by a private partner who will lease the building back to the university.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new engineering building will start at 4 p.m. in the parking lot between the Duckering and Bunnell buildings. The 120,000-square-foot building will provide modern classroom and laboratory space for engineering academic and research programs. The university has received about half of the funding for the $108.6 million UAF project and a similar project at the University of Alaska Anchorage. UA has requested that the Legislature provide the second half of the funding this session. The building is slated for completion during the summer of 2015.

A short receptions will follow each ceremony.
