The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service in Anchorage will offer two sessions of a 16-week diabetes prevention program that begins Feb. 16.

One-hour sessions will meet weekly at 11 a.m. or 5:30 p.m. Mondays at the Extension district office at 1675 C St. Anchorage agent Leslie Shallcross, a registered dietitian, will lead the program developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Participants will learn how to eat healthy, add physical activity to their routine, manage stress, stay motivated and make lasting lifestyle changes. According to the CDC, lifestyle changes reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent for people with prediabetes.

Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include being 45 or older, being overweight, a family history of Type 2 diabetes, being physically active less than three times a week and having been diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

The program fee of $240 includes monthly follow-ups for a year. See details about the program and online registration at http://bit.ly/diabetesclass. For more information, call the district office at 907-786-6300.
