Professor Hajo Eicken has been appointed interim director of the International Arctic Research Center effective March 22. Eicken, a professor of geophysics, has served as deputy director of IARC since 2014.

Eicken succeeds Larry Hinzman, who became interim vice chancellor for research on March 22 after serving as IARC director since 2007.

Eicken has been hailed internationally for his work in disseminating scientific knowledge not only to the research community but also to the public. He has advanced the understanding of sea ice dynamics using western science and Native observations, demonstrating the value of traditional knowledge in environmental research.
