The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will host two workshops Sept. 28 in Fairbanks on practical ways to use renewable energy in camp and at home.

A passive solar workshop will run from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and a rocket stove workshop from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the district Extension office at 724 27th Ave.

Participants in the passive solar workshop will build their own solar backpack oven and learn about using solar energy for cooking, hot water and heating. Extension energy specialist Art Nash and Jim Scott, an electrical engineer who has experience with solar design, will lead the workshop.

The rocket stove workshop will cover the theory, design, construction and use of rocket stoves, which are efficient stoves that burn wood for heating and cooking. The class will emphasize using low cost and salvaged local materials for construction. Participants will assemble two stoves. Instructors will include rocket stove enthusiasts Jim Scott, Lasse Holmes and Gary Currington.

The workshops cost $30 each or $50 for both. Register at http://bit.ly/ces-workshops and see more details at www.uaf.edu/ces.
