The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service invites the Anchorage community to tour its new district office during a Nov. 29 open house.

The open house will run from 3:30-7 p.m. at 16th Avenue and C Street. The event will include informational displays, Japanese drumming, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and light refreshments.

The Anchorage 4-H drumming club, Tomodachi Daiko, will perform at 5:30 p.m., followed by the ribbon-cutting at 6 p.m. Speakers will include UAF Chancellor Brian Rogers, Extension director Fred Schlutt and Samantha Kirstein, chair of Extension’s state advisory council.

Agents and staff members will be available to answer questions on 4-H, water quality, integrated pest management, the Master Gardener program and food preservation. Displays will highlight the value of eating locally grown foods and Extension history and nutrition programs. A video will feature Extension’s refugee farmers market project.

Extension moved to its new facility at 1675 C St. in early October. The leased space on the first floor of the Kaloa Building offers a larger classroom, easier public access and videoconferencing capabilities for distance-delivery programs.

The Cooperative Extension Service is a nationwide education network supported by a partnership between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and land-grant universities. For more information on the open house or Extension, call the Anchorage office at 907-786-6300.
