UAF to hold science expo at Fort Wainwright

Science can be fun, especially if it’s gooey, hands-on or related to dinosaurs. The
young and young at heart can explore the fun side of science at the Discover Science
Expo for Kids from 1 - 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Fort Wainwright Youth Center.
The free event is open to the public and children of all ages.
The event will include a marine critter touch tank, real dinosaur bones and robots
made out of legos. Children can make slime, and learn about sea monsters, plate tectonics
and Alaska’s amazing mammals.
This is the second year that UAF graduate student Danielle Serratos is organizing
the event. Last year, 281 people from on and off the post came to experience science
first-hand.
Serratos is a master’s student in the Department of Geology and Geophysics and is also a GK-12 Fellow with the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. As a fellow, Serratos connects students and teachers to resources that enhance their
understanding of science. She wanted to take the concept one step further and bring
these resources to the students and families of Fort Wainwright.
"As a scientist, I get to see firsthand the amazing things we do at the university,
and I thought that military families should also get those opportunities,” she said.
Serratos, whose husband was in the Marine Corps for five years, said that events like
the Expo help build relationships between the military and academia that benefit the
community.
Members of the public who don't have military ID and are planning to drive on post
