May 25: 2012-13 Academic Leadership Institute application

April 30, 2012

Marmian Grimes

The Academic Leadership Institute is designed as an opportunity for a small group of faculty, staff and/or administrators to explore the topic of leadership in an academic context. Since its inception in 2000-01 more than one hundred individuals have taken part in the institute, resulting in enhanced leadership at UAF. You are encouraged to apply for this professional development opportunity.

The format of the institute is a morning gathering (9 a.m. - noon) one Saturday each month during the academic year with the time divided between an invited speaker, questions and answers, and a case study. A continental breakfast is served at each session. There will be homework in the form of required reading. Each of the twelve or so "students" will receive the set of books courtesy of the Provost.

Who should consider attending?

  • Relatively new administrators

  • Faculty or staff who are considering administration as a potential career direction

  • Faculty or staff who are simply interested in the topic of leadership in an academic setting.

Participants do not have to be located in Fairbanks; the intent is to include some rural participants by audio.

How to apply:
Email Hope Bickmeier at the Northern Leadership Center at hope.bickmeier@alaska.edu by 5 p.m., Friday, May 25 with the following three statements:

  1. Why you want to be included;

  2. A statement of commitment that you will do the required reading; and

  3. A statement of commitment that you intend to take part (in person or by audio) in every scheduled session.

About 40 applications are typically received for the twelve openings, thereby, the quality of your responses can make a difference. Hope will notify you of your acceptance and give you instructions on where and when to pick up your texts.
