Mushroom expert to lead workshop in Palmer

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service office in Palmer will host mycologist Gary Laursen Aug. 21-23 for a workshop on collecting, identifying and preparing wild edible mushrooms.


Laursen, who holds a doctorate in botany and ecology, has studied Arctic, sub-Arctic and sub-Antarctic fungi around the world for more than 40 years.


The workshop at the Matanuska Experiment Farm will provide information on the mushrooms of the Mat-Su region and the roles they play in different environments and will include field identification. The workshop will also cover current issues involving mushrooms and resources for continuing studies.


The course will include a lecture from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 21 and fieldwork from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 22-23. The fee is $100 for the entire course or $20 for the lecture only. Both activities will be offered at the district Extension office in Kerttula Hall, at 1509 S. Georgeson Road.
