Dr. Tim Barnett has been named student affairs dean at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
The student affairs dean establishes direction and provides leadership and advocacy for all aspects of university student services at both the main campus and six community campuses.
"Tim has served in a variety of student affairs capacities throughout his career and comes to UAF with impressive credentials," said Don Foley, associate dean of students. "He's going to do a fantastic job. We're pleased to have him here for the start of the fall semester."
Barnett was associate dean of students at Biola University in Southern Calif., director of student activities at Loyola University in New Orleans and most recently vice president of student affairs at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D.
"He began his career in student affairs working in the student union field and brings a strong background in strategic planning, assessment, partnerships with faculty and student affairs management," said Foley.
Barnett received a Fulbright scholarship to engage in research and discussion about strategic planning and diversity in Germany. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska in 1976, his master's degree in student development from Azusa Pacific University in 1985 and his Ph.D. in education and business from the Claremont Graduate School in 1997.
The UAF student affairs dean oversees the departments of Residence Life, Wood Center student union and Student Activities, as well as the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Barnett will also work closely with the enrollment management office.
