Doug Goering has been named dean of the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Engineering and Mines.

"I am very pleased that Doug Goering has accepted the CEM dean position," said UAF Provost Susan Henrichs. "He will continue to be a strong leader for our engineering programs and will build on the excellent relationships he has established with Alaskan businesses and industries."

Goering has been with the university since 1989. He has served as interim dean since December of last year and prior to that was associate dean in the college.

Goering's research interests include computational heat transfer and fluid mechanics, numerical modeling, energy systems and heat transfer in cold climates. He has worked extensively with numerical simulations of heat transfer in permafrost. He is principal investigator on a project examining the heat transfer characteristics of a new permafrost-resistant roadbed technology, which has been undergoing field testing for the past several years. Thompson Drive, which serves as UAF's main entrance and was a collaborative project with the Department of Transportation, is one of Goering's most visible research projects.

Goering earned his undergraduate degrees in physics and mechanical engineering from the University of Washington, a master's degree in mechanical engineering from UAF and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California Berkeley.

CEM includes the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computing Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering and Petroleum Engineering and the Institute of Northern Engineering.

The college was reorganized in 2004 to include all of UAF's engineering programs. CEM is the only college in Alaska that offers six undergraduate degrees fully accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
