Junior guard Pat Voeut (Bellingham, Wash./Communications) has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Red Lion Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning.

“He's a pretty unassuming player but a tough player,” head coach Mick Durham said. “He's well-rounded, better defensively than you'd think and one of our best shooters. He's starting to understand what we want done out there so his assists are coming around but I've been pleased because I like my points to be able to score and he's done that while running the team.”

Voeut helped lead the Nanooks (4-1) to a perfect 3-0 week and the GCI Alaska Invitational title as he averaged 15.3 points after shooting 65.4-percent (17-26 FG) from the floor. He also contributed 6.3 assists, 3.0 rebound and 1.7 steals in the three wins.

In Saturday's championship game, he turned in season-highs of 18 points (7-9 FG) and eight assists to lead Alaska to an 85-72 win against Colorado Christian, a team which beat the 'Nooks a week earlier in Anchorage.

Amazingly enough, Voeut did all this after playing only 11 minutes last Saturday and not practicing until Wednesday due to sickness.

“He did a nice job getting himself ready to play after going down with food poisoning last Saturday in Anchorage,” head coach Mick Durham said. “He couldn't practice until Wednesday, so thinking he could hold up for three games, we were just trying to see how many minutes we could get out of him Thursday. He did a great job of eating properly and bounced back quickly to play three games. I never imagined he'd have that strength to play three games like that.”

The Nanooks head to Voeut's hometown of Bellingham, Wash., this week to compete in a pair of neutral site games at the WWU Chuck Randall Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by Western Washington. Alaska takes on Southwest Baptist Friday and Concordia (Minn.) Saturday.
