The University of Alaska Fairbanks Police Department is urging members of the public and campus community to use extra caution when walking on West Ridge and North Campus trails due to recent reports of a bear in the area.

Police received one report of someone seeing a bear in the brush between the Reichardt Building and Cutler Apartments and another report of tracks on the walking trails behind the Irving Building.

While they have been unable to substantiate any of the reports, police are asking people to be aware of their surroundings and use caution when in the area.

To report wildlife on campus, contact the police department at 4714-7721. For more information on bear safety and what to do if you are confronted with a bear, visit the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s website at: http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=livingwithbears.main.
