Speaker to discuss sport management

David J. Halberstam, president of the Halby Group and former play-by-play announcer for the Miami Heat, will speak about the sport management industry on Monday, March 27, at 5:30 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.

Halberstam’s talk is titled “The Sports World: Job Opportunities, Where to Look and How to Interview.”

Halberstam has had a long career in sport sales and sales management, including 10 years at Westwood One, where he was he was promoted to executive vice president of sports and oversaw some $75 million in annual billing. Westwood One is among the top three national radio networks in America, and its rights include the NFL, the NCAA Tournament, the Masters and other high-profile events.

Earlier in his career, Halberstam spent 10 years growing the sports department at Katz Media, the country’s largest national station representative. Halberstam had the responsibility for selling national, MLB, NFL, NHL, NFL and NCAA packages. In addition to serving as corporate sales director for the Miami Heat, Halberstam also formed the Madison Square Garden Radio Network and grew St. John’s University’s sponsorship support to more than $1 million annually in the 1980s.

Halberstam has written a dozen or so columns on sales, sports broadcasting and sports history for publications like USA Today, LA Times, Yahoo Sports, Bleacher Report, New York Daily News, Miami Herald, South Florida Sun-Sentinel and SportsBusiness Journal. He also served as a play-by-play basketball radio announcer for many years (Miami Heat of the NBA, St. John’s University basketball on WCBS and WFAN in New York, and Westwood One Radio Network nationally).
