Provost Susan Henrichs has appointed Steve Atwater as interim dean of the School of Education. Atwater succeeds Allan Morotti, who recently announced his decision to return to the faculty.

Atwater served as the University of Alaska associate vice president for K-12 outreach from December 2014 until September 2015. From 2009-2014, he served as the superintendent of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, and from 2001 to 2008 he was the superintendent of the Lake and Peninsula School District, headquartered in King Salmon. Earlier he held several other administrative positions with Alaska school districts, and he served as a teacher in rural Alaska from 1990-1997.

Atwater earned two degrees from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction, and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in education leadership. He also qualified for Alaska administrator and superintendent certificates through attendance at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
