Alaska students will compete in the state’s National Geographic Bee Friday, April 1 starting at 8:45 a.m. at the Egan Center in Anchorage. The event will draw 100 fourth- through eighth-graders from 20 Alaska school districts. The contestants have prequalified by winning their school’s geography bee and passing a qualifying test.

Preliminary rounds in the morning will determine the top 10 finalists, who then compete in the afternoon for first place, which will be announced at about 1:45 p.m. The winner will represent the state at the National Geographic Bee May 24-25 in Washington, D.C. The national winner receives a $25,000 college scholarship, lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and an all expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands. The University of Alaska Geography Program at UAF also recognizes the top three finishers with a medal.
