UAF celebrates Alaska Book Week with readings, open mic

The University of Alaska Fairbanks will celebrate Alaska Book Week with activities Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the Wood Center on the UAF campus.

Alaska authors will give readings between 10 a.m. and noon and there will be an open mic from noon to 2 p.m. University of Alaska Press acquisitions editor James Engelhardt will also be available to meet with authors.

Authors scheduled to read include Peggy Shumaker, Alaska writer laureate (“Gnawed Bones” and “Wings Moist from the Other World”), Carol Kaynor (“Skijor with your Dog” and “Defensible Space” in The Northern Review), Gerri Brightwell (“Cold Country” and “The Dark Lantern”), Sean Hill (“Blood Ties and Brown Liquor” and editor of Broadsided Press), and Derick Burleson (“Never Night” and “Ejo: Poems, Rwanda 1991-94”).

The UAF Bookstore will have a wide selection of books by Alaskans available for sale. Other departments will provide information about writing and reading in the Far North. Door prizes will be offered at department tables.

UAF departments participating include the University of Alaska Press, Alaska Sea Grant, the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, the Alaska Native Language Center, Permafrost/ Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series and the UAF Bookstore.
