The University of Alaska Fairbanks Community and Technical College has developed a 10-month course sequence that leads to certificates in not only baking and pastry but also the culinary arts. Classes begin Aug. 18. Interested students are encouraged to sign up today.

Intensive, hands-on coursework teaches students the skills required to be productive professionals within the culinary arts and hospitality industry. The efficient, 10-month sequence has been structured to enable students to "get in, get out and go to work."

Students enrolled in the dual certificate program will receive 420 hours of hands-on instruction. Students will gain expertise in indispensable cooking techniques, the nuances of flavor, the tools of the trade, business trends, kitchen efficiency and food handling standards.

A certificate from a culinary school gives students a foundation in cooking techniques and food preparation, along with an understanding of what restaurant work is like.

The dual-certificate coursework has been structured to allow students to transition seamlessly to the associate of applied science degree in culinary arts and hospitality, which requires a second year of study.

For more information, contact the culinary arts and hospitality advisor at 907-455-2820.
