Upcoming events: Alaska mammals, eye health, ocean history, Irish tunes

University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning is hosting more than 40 free lectures, concerts and other events this summer. Here is what’s happening during the week ahead:
• On Monday, July 18, the Magical Mondays hands-on learning series will feature “Alaska mammals: Wolves and bears and marmots! Oh my!” by Aren Gunderson, the mammals collection manager at the University of Alaska Museum of the North. The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium and atrium.
• On Tuesday, July 19, the Healthy Living lecture series presents “Why you see and why you don’t,” by ophthalmologist Dr. Katherine Johnson. The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.
• On Wednesday, July 20, the Discover Alaska series will host “Owning the ocean: Salmon, science and a history of borders in the North Pacific,” by Ross Coen, a doctoral candidate in history at the University of Washington. The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.
• On Thursday, July 21, the Music in the Garden concert series will feature the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival Celtic Ensemble. Songs in the lively spirit of traditional Irish music will be performed by Isaac Alderson, Irish flute; Johnny Cuomo, Irish guitar; Niall O’Leary, spoons, lilting and accordion; and James Yoshizawa, bodhran and bones. Music begins at 7 p.m. at the Georgeson Botanical Garden.
