The University of Alaska Fairbanks will recognize more than 100 low-income, first-generation and disabled students who are succeeding in college during an awards presentation and reception Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 3:30 pm in the Wood Center multilevel lounge.

The event is one of many nationwide this week that recognize the accomplishments of students via their participation in TRiO programs, which are designed to help students from poor and working families successfully enter and complete college. At UAF, TRiO programs include Upward Bound, which provides an early college experience, and Student Support Services, which offers tutoring, mentoring, social and cultural engagement, and access to educational resources.

The event will feature a student speaker and a guest speaker, Lael Oldmixon, an Upward Bound program alumna and director of UA College Savings Plan and UA Scholars Program. Former TRiO participant, SSS alumnus and former tutor Stephen Wehe, an engineer with Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, will also be recognized.

“We want more people in Fairbanks to know about the services of the TRiO programs," said Student Support Services director Ginny Redmond. "We also want people to know that this program works and should be expanded to serve more students from low-income families across Alaska.”
