Move over New York Fashion Week. For one night only, University of Alaska Fairbanks students will walk the runway wearing indigenous fashion with a contemporary twist.
Indigenous and Visible, a fundraiser benefiting the UAF Native Student Union, showcases the best of Alaska Native art and fashion. The event is slated for 6-10:30 p.m. on Nov. 19 at The Hub, 410 Second Ave., Suite 100 in Fairbanks. Tickets are $10 for UAF students and $20 general admission.
“Indigenous and Visible spotlights the creativity and artistic self-expression of UAF’s Alaska Native students,” said Charlene Stern, faculty advisor for the Native Student Union. “Proceeds from this event goes to help support our mission of developing emerging Alaska Native leaders and raise awareness about Alaska Native policy.”
The glamorous night out kicks off with appetizers and art show featuring master and emerging Alaska Native artists. Fashionistas wearing traditional and contemporary regalia will make their catwalk debut at 7 p.m., followed by music and dancing from 8-10:30 p.m.
The fashion show models include UAF students and community members wearing one-of-a-kind clothing and jewelry representing their unique Alaska Native culture and heritage. Elements Salon & Day Spa has donated makeup artistry services to the fundraiser.
Only a limited number of tickets are available. To purchase tickets in advance, contact Charlene Stern at firstname.lastname@example.org or 907-474-5293.
