Lacey Brewster, a 2013 graduate, received the TRIO Achiever Award during the Feb. 16 TRiO Day event at Wood Center on the Fairbanks campus.

The annual TRiO Day celebrates federally funded programs that encourage higher education for low-income students. At UAF, those programs include Student Support Services and Upward Bound.

Brewster accepted the award via Skype from Palmer, where she works as a public defender. After earning a bachelor's degree in psychology from UAF, she graduated from the University of Cincinnati Law School in 2016.

Also at the TRiO Day event, the UAF Office of Admissions received the TRiO Champion Award for supporting TRiO-eligible students.

James Gilchrest, the event's student speaker, shared his experience with Student Support Services at UAF.  Vincent Zamora, a 2016 graduate and SSS alumnus, shared his perspective on a moderated panel. Lael Oldmixon, a TRiO alumna and UA staff member, and Karsten Hueffer, UAF faculty member, also generously donated their time to answer questions on the panel.
