On Dec. 23, 1992, my husband and I were on the receiving end of the services provided by the American Red Cross — one of the more than 20 member agencies of the United Way of the Tanana Valley. That was the day we lost our home to a fire. The temperature was minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit, ice fog was everywhere and members of the University Fire Department (major kudos to them) were covered with ice as they battled the blaze. Not long after we arrived to the site, the Red Cross was there with hot coffee, a warm vehicle and a lot of great advice. We were young and had no idea how to navigate such a serious loss. The American Red Cross was there for us in the midst of our tragedy.

When I worked at Golden Valley Electric Association more than 20 years ago, I volunteered to lead the GVEA United Way campaign. I discovered why giving to the United Way Community Care Fund is the best way to help the most people. I learned that each member agency benefits from funds given to the Community Care Fund. All of United Way’s member agencies go through a stringent process that includes an audit of their finances to show they use philanthropic dollars according to IRS guidelines, among other checks and balances, adding to my confidence that the agencies’ finances are well managed. In addition, all of the money donated in Fairbanks stays in Fairbanks, with the exception of a very small administrative charge.

I started my fundraising career in 2002 working at United Way as its community development manager. While I was there, our team developed a substance abuse social marketing campaign. A community needs assessment called the COMPASS project identified substance abuse as one of the top social concerns within our community. Today, the “Clear Minds, Bright Futures” designation goes toward addressing those concerns — such a vital need in our community.

As you can see, I have a long history with the United Way of the Tanana Valley. However, with the diversity of the organizations supported through the United Way, you may be on the receiving end of their  services one day too. Would you please join me in giving to one of our community’s brightest gems?
