Week's events: portrait painting, immunizations, owls, bluegrass

University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning is hosting more than 40 free lectures, concerts and other events this summer. Here is what’s happening during the week ahead:

• On Monday, Aug. 8, the Magical Mondays hands-on learning series will present Todd Sherman, the dean of UAF’s College of Liberal Arts and a professor of art, leading real-time portrait painting. The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium and atrium.

• On Tuesday, Aug. 9, the Healthy Living lecture series will feature nurse consultant Shelly Foint Anderson and public health nurse Jenny Davis discussing “Immunizations across the lifespan.” The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.

• On Wednesday, Aug. 10, the Discover Alaska series will present David Russell, senior lecturer in zoology at Miami University of Ohio, on “Owl-la-Carte: A recipe for boreal own nesting success.” The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.

• On Thursday, Aug. 11, the Music in the Garden concert series will host the ET Barnette String Band. Named for the founder of Fairbanks, a lover of bluegrass, the band has been playing traditional bluegrass for more than three years. Music begins at 7 p.m. at the Georgeson Botanical Garden.
