Fairbanks orchardist Steve Masterman will teach beginning and intermediate classes on grafting apple trees.

All classes will meet in the Arctic Health Research Building on the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ West Ridge. The beginner class will meet from 6-9 p.m. April 25 or 10 a.m.-1 p.m. April 27. The intermediate class will meet from 2-5 p.m. April 28.

The beginning class will cover the basics of apple grafting, which varieties of apples grow best in the Fairbanks area and which rootstock will be hardy in your location. Participants will graft four apple trees to take home.

An intermediate class offers more experience grafting and guidance from Masterman and other local experts. This workshop is for anyone who has experience grafting or has registered for the beginner class, too. Participants will graft six trees to take home.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension will host the classes, which cost $30 each and will meet in Room 1W05. More details and registration are available at http://bit.ly/AppleGraft19.

Participants are asked to bring leather work gloves, a sharp knife with a straight, thin blade, and a cutting board. Parking is free, and participants should enter through the building’s west-facing doors.
