Budget update: March 17, 2021

Tori Tragis

— by Dan White, chancellor

In December 2020 I appointed a Budget Options Task Force (BOTF) of faculty and staff that was charged with identifying options for large- and small-scale budget reductions (e.g., vertical cuts) as well as new revenues. The BOTF recommendations are serving as an additional set of ideas for consideration this spring by me, the core leadership team, Chancellor’s Cabinet and the Planning and Budget Committee.

You can find the committee's report (PDF) here. The report outlines the top 10 ideas based on a rubric ranking method. Additionally, all 38 ideas generated by the committee (PDF) are here. The committee brought forward a wide range of ideas that focused on areas of resource reallocation, consolidations, reduction and expansion. Some of the ideas generated are already being explored.

As a next step, the BOTF committee chair will present the report to the Chancellor’s Cabinet and provide the report to the Planning and Budget Committee for consideration.

I want to thank the committee members for their efforts in completing this large undertaking in a very short time frame. I know this was no easy task and appreciate all of the hard work that went into generating the report.

I also want to make you aware that the expedited administrative management review is still underway. The committee, chaired by former UAF faculty and administrator Joan Braddock, is looking at administrative management positions across the university. The committee has requested an extension from the original mid-March deadline to the end of March for the final report submission. Once I have the final report we will announce an opportunity for anyone to provide input to me on the report’s recommendations.

 Thank you for choosing UAF.
