The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will host the first round of an online Three Minute Thesis competition on Tuesday, Feb. 16, beginning at noon. The event is open to the public via Zoom.

The Three Minute Thesis , or 3MT, is an academic research communication competition established by Australia’s University of Queensland in 2008.

The competition challenges graduate students to communicate the significance of their projects to a general audience in just three minutes using a single presentation slide.

Contestants are graduate students from CFOS’ Oceanography, Marine Biology, and Fisheries departments. The judges include directors, faculty members, communications professionals and other staff from the Fairbanks, Seward and Juneau campuses.

The competition on Feb. 16 has three one-hour heats starting at noon, 1 p.m and 2 p.m. The top two presentations from each heat will compete on Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. Viewers must join in via Zoom before each hour’s presentations begin.
