December museum programs explore space

The University of Alaska Museum of the North is offering hands-on programs during the month of December to explore the art, culture and science of outer space.
At "Family Day: Outer Space" on Saturday, Dec. 6, from noon to 4 p.m., visitors can catch a show in the portable planetarium, build space robots and explore the aurora. Special guests from UAF’s NASA Robotics Program and the Geophysical Institute will offer activities. There is no admission fee for children 14 and under at all Family Days, thanks to support from Saltchuk.
Other programs are free with admission to the museum. Early Explorers, for children five and under, meets each Friday from 10 a.m.-noon. Parents and kids can enjoy arts, crafts and conversation with provided activities. Junior Curators, for kids six and up, is offered two Saturdays each month from 2-4 p.m. Discover animals, plants, culture, and art through hands-on investigations and crafts. The theme for Saturday, Dec. 13, is Solar System and Telescope Basics, a program that begins at 2 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 20, kids can celebrate solstice and the sun.
