Hockey signs pair of BCHL forwards, Basara and Hochhausen

Alaska Nanooks head coach Dallas Ferguson announced the signing of two British Columbia Hockey League forwards and teammates on the West Kelowna Warriors to National Letters of Intent. Marcus Basara (Port Moody, B.C.) and Shawn Hochhausen (Kelowna, B.C.) will join the Nanooks in the fall as freshmen with four years of NCAA Division I eligibility remaining.
“Fairbanks is getting two quality young men who will enhance the program both off and on the ice,” West Kelowna Warriors head coach and general manager Rylan Ferster said. “They are excellent team guys.”
Marcus Basara
Basara is a 6-foot, 187-pound right wing who played the 2012-13 season and part of the 2011-12 season with the West Kelowna (previously called Westside) Warriors. In that span he scored 94 points in 109 games, including 33 goals and 37 assists (70 points) in 56 games to rank fifth in goals and (tied for) fifth in points in the BCHL. He was a member of the BCHL (interior) First All-Star Team also.
“Marcus is one of the most dynamic offensive players I have had the pleasure to coach,” Ferster said. “He has a pro shot and skates like one; he has a knack of scoring big goals and shows up every night.”
Prior to joining the Warriors, he was a two-year member of the Vernon Vipers, compiling 18-27-45 in 80 games. In four years of junior hockey he scored 61 goals and 139 points in 172 games.
His other prep hockey highlights include being the leading scorer for the Notre Dame Hounds Midget AAA team that won the Canadian Midget National Championship title in 2009-10 and the RBC Cup, Doyle Cup and BCHL Championship titles in 2010-11.
“Marcus has a rare combination of speed and skill,” Alaska assistant coach Lance West said. “He has the ability to make plays at top speed and will be a threat offensively whenever he is on the ice. Marcus has shown the ability to score at every level he has played and we expect that too at UAF.”
Basara will pursue studies in business at UAF.
Shawn Hochhausen
Hochhausen is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound center who played the entirety of his junior hockey career with the Warriors. The Kelowna native appeared in 156 regular season games over three seasons amassing 23 goals and 60 assists good for 83 points and 155 penalty minutes.
“Shawn is one of the most complete players in the BCHL,” Ferster said. “He is above 70 percent on his faceoff and is very difficult to play against; he can kill penalties and also play on the power play.”
He showed steady improvement throughout his junior hockey career, bettering his year-long output each season. He nearly doubled his 2010-11 rookie season totals (4-13—17), scoring 11-20—31 in 2011-12. He saved the best for last (2012-13), notching 8-27—35 this year with West Kelowna, while adding seven assists in 10 playoff games.
“Shawn is a complete 200-foot player,” West said. “He is a smart physical player that understands how to play in all three zones. He won seventy percent of his faceoffs and is an outstanding leader. He will impact the program both on and off the ice.”
Hochhausen plans to major in Petroleum Engineering at UAF.
