Honoring students at graduation

I work in an academic department and it seems like around this time of year everyone starts complaining about how long the graduation ceremony takes. This includes quite a few people in leadership positions. Isn't it a contradiction to complain about how long it takes to honor the accomplishments of our students while at the same time trying to find ways to get more students to complete degrees?
