The University of Alaska Fairbanks Large Animal Research Station will host its annual Birthday Bash open house to welcome the spring calves Saturday, May 30, from noon to 5 p.m. Parking for the event is at the Taku Lot off Farmers' Loop. A free shuttle will bring attendees to LARS.

The free public event will feature children's activities, animal viewing, ice cream from Hot Licks, activities from Camp Habitat and Fairbanks Children’s Museum, and an opportunity to adopt a stuffed musk ox. The Antler and Horn, the station’s newly renovated gift shop, will be also be open and features work by local artists. Sales from the shop support the station.

This spring, LARS welcomed 11 reindeer calves and two musk ox calves, with more on the way. The station will continue its tradition of asking the public to suggest names for the calves. Each year, LARS picks a theme for the year and then names each animal according to the theme.
