The National Judicial College recognizes UAF Tribal Management
Professor Kevin Illingworth for five-year teaching milestone
Kevin Illingworth, UAF’s Interior-Aleutians Campus’s tribal management associate professor,
was honored by The National Judicial College for five years of outstanding service
as an instructor specializing in federal Indian law and how it applies to Alaska tribal
courts.
“Kevin has a gift for teaching,” says Lisa Jaeger, tribal government specialist at
Tanana Chiefs Conference and an adjunct Tribal Management instructor. “He explains
federal Indian law and how it affects Alaska tribes in an extraordinarily user-friendly
way that makes a complicated subject easily understood by tribal court administrators
and lay judges, whether they are in Alaska or the Lower 48.”
After graduating from UAF, Illingworth earned his juris doctorate degree from the
University of Idaho. Before joining I-AC in 2002, he worked for Mt. Sanford Tribal
Consortium, assisting the Mentasta Traditional Council and Cheesh’ Na Tribal Council
with the development of tribal laws and operating tribal justice systems in each village.
As program head for the tribal management program, he teaches courses in topics such
as tribal government, federal Indian law and tribal justice. A recognized leading
authority in Alaska tribal justice and federal Indian law, Illingworth has presented
at numerous statewide and national conferences, including the Annual Bureau of Indian
Affairs Alaska Rural Service Providers Conference, the National Indian Child Welfare
Conference and numerous Alaska tribal court trainings.
The National Tribal Judicial Center at The National Judicial College is one of the
first institutions to address the specific needs of American Indian and Alaska Native
