New supervisory training program coming soon

Cornerstone

A new supervisory training program, Supervising for Success, will begin Nov. 8. The training program has been organized into three modules. The program is for staff who are supervisors, but is also open to faculty who wish to attend. The modules will be presented jointly by Human Resources and the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity.

Supervisors hired after Nov. 1, 2012, are required to complete the program within six months and those who have already completed training have three years to complete the new program. If you have questions about the new program, please talk with your supervisor or contact UAF Human Resources at 474-7700.

MODULE ONE (3 hours)
Setting the Stage

This module covers the overall vision UAF has for its leaders. It clarifies expectations and sets the stage for successful management of employees. It identifies what supervisors need to understand to achieve their goals effectively and in compliance.

MODULE TWO (3 hours)
Effective Hiring

This module focuses on giving supervisors the resources they need to make effective staffing decisions, including recruitment and hire, administration of day-to-day HR policies, and leave management.

  • Staffing (classification and compensation, wage and hour, recruitment, and onboarding)

  • Employment laws and other provisions

  • Employee Assistance Program, Family Medical Leave Act and long-term disability


MODULE THREE (3 hours)
Managing Employees

This module focuses on employee management, including how to set expectations and communicate them, motivating employees and providing feedback, and rewards and discipline, all in the context of UA/UAF.
