Aspiring miners may pick up a mother lode of information during a free basic prospecting skills workshop May 30 in Fairbanks.
Longtime Interior gold miner Dave Wright will share his expertise during the eight-hour workshop offered by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service and the Delta Mine Training Center. The workshop will run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in Room 154 of the University Park Building at 1000 University Ave.
Wright has prospected and mined in the Interior since the 1970s and has negotiated several mining exploration contracts. Workshop topics will include mineral tests, identifying common ore materials and rock types, panning for gold and staking a claim. Other topics are mining methods, sampling, prospecting and using geological maps.
The workshop is limited to 16 participants who are junior-high-school age or older. Preregistration is requested by May 27. For more information or to register, contact Carolyn Howard at 907-895-2051 or e-mail email@example.com.
