Sandra Long has been named the 2019 winner of the Chancellor's Cornerstone Award. Long is the campus business supervisor at Bristol Bay Campus.

The Chancellor's Cornerstone Award recognizes UAF staff for sustained outstanding contributions toward accomplishing and enhancing the UAF mission and strategic plan.

In the nomination packet for Long, her supporters describe her as a champion for diversity and community outreach. They note that although she arrived in Dillingham only a few years ago, she was committed to learning about Alaska Native culture and the social environment in the region. She underwent training in a variety of programs related to interpersonal safety, racism and mental health awareness, and became the Title IX contact for her service area.

In addition to her official duties, Long serves the broader Bristol Bay community as a passport agent. Because she lives near the Dillingham campus, she is also frequently called upon to resolve unexpected problems ranging from lost keys to errant security alarms, and once discovered an early morning fire in the boiler room.

"Sandra has proven herself willing to go above and beyond in both large and small ways," Long's supporters wrote. "She is a conscientious and dedicated university employee."

"She gives the entire university system a more favorable image."

Long will receive her award at the longevity and awards ceremony during the 2019 Staff Recognition and Development Day on Wednesday, May 8. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in the Wood Center ballroom and will webstreamed.
