Volcanic Crisis Awareness Workshop: Feb. 16 - 17

FEMA is hosting a Volcanic Crisis Awareness workshop at the Geophysical Institute 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m, Thursday, Feb. 16 and 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17.

This day-and-a-half awareness-level course will provide participants with an understanding of the complex factors that influence volcanic crises: the hazards, vulnerabilities, impacts, risks, and the tools and processes that support monitoring, forecasts, warnings, preparedness, mitigation and response. This course enhances the abilities of participants to support their organizations’ preparedness and response efforts for future volcanic crises.

Content covered in the course provides an understanding of the processes, impacts and causes of volcanic hazards; current monitoring and hazard assessment tools and products; volcano warning and dissemination systems and methods; and, community response to eruptions and volcanic crises. Participants will learn how organizational preparedness and community-level planning support mitigation of volcanic hazards.

The course targets a broad cross section of professionals involved in emergency management, fire services, hazardous material personnel, planners, public utilities, public health, private business and municipal services.
