Week's events include cartoons, space, exercise, folk music

University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning is hosting more than 40 free lectures, concerts and other events this summer. Here is what’s happening during the week ahead:


  • On Monday, June 27, The Magical Mondays hands-on learning series will present “Let’s draw!” with cartoonist and UAF art lecturer Jamie Smith. The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium and atrium.



  • On Tuesday, June 28, the Healthy Living lecture series features “Six pack to a better back,” led by physical therapist Valerie Ann Phelps and fitness trainer Peter Burke. The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.



  • On Wednesday, June 29, the Discover Alaska series will present Travis Rector, University of Alaska Anchorage professor of astronomy and physics, speaking about “Coloring the Universe.” The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.



  • On Thursday, June 30, the Music in the Garden concert series will host Emily Anderson, a local singer-songwriter and graduate of the Berklee College of Music. Her music, influenced by Carole King, Ingrid Michaelson and Regina Spektor, ranges from sentimental to humorous. Music begins at 7 p.m. at the Georgeson Botanical Garden.
